Bitly vs SwiftURL for Indian businesses

16 July 2026

Bitly is a capable, well-known link shortener, and for a lot of global marketing it is perfectly fine. But if your team sends links over SMS or WhatsApp in India, or handles Indian customers’ personal data, the questions that matter change. Pricing needs to make sense for a local budget; “analytics” becomes “analytics I can act on”; and a whole category of India-specific compliance appears that a global tool was never built for. Here is an honest comparison for that context.

(Competitor pricing and plan details below are as of July 2026 and can change. Verify current numbers on Bitly’s own pricing page before relying on them.)

Pricing, side by side

Bitly is priced in USD, and the tiers are built around a global buyer:

  • Free, a small allowance, on the order of 5 links a month, and notably without click analytics on the free tier.
  • Core, around $10 per month.
  • Growth, around $29 per month, which is the tier where a single custom domain typically appears.
  • Premium, around $199 per month.
  • Enterprise, custom pricing.

SwiftURL keeps its plans simple and tax-inclusive for Indian teams:

  • Free, ₹0, 100 active links and real click analytics included, not withheld.
  • Pro, ₹499 per month.
  • Business, ₹1,999 per month.
  • Enterprise, custom.

Two differences stand out. First, SwiftURL’s free tier gives you analytics and a meaningful link allowance, where Bitly’s free tier is deliberately thin. Second, SwiftURL’s paid tiers start low and the basics, safety checks, an audit log, and analytics, are never gated behind an enterprise call, so a growing team isn’t forced up the ladder just to unlock reporting or a custom domain. If you want the full plan breakdown, see pricing.

Compliance: the real gap

This is where the two tools genuinely diverge. Bitly is built for global marketing and does not carry India-specific regulatory tooling.

  • DLT / TRAI for SMS. Indian commercial SMS must use a DLT-registered sender header, and the link inside the message is judged alongside it. SwiftURL lets you carry DLT-registered sender headers on your links (on Pro and above) and records the compliance metadata, PE ID, header, template, provider, behind each one. Bitly has no concept of this. If DLT is new to you, start with how DLT and TRAI rules affect your marketing links.
  • DPDP. India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act sets expectations for consent, grievance handling, and retention. SwiftURL ships a consent record, a named grievance officer per organization, privacy-first analytics (no raw IP storage, no cross-day tracking), and lawful erasure. A global shortener generally treats none of this as first-class. More in DPDP and link tracking for Indian SMBs.

To be fair to Bitly: if you never touch Indian SMS and never handle Indian personal data, this gap may not affect you at all. Compliance depth only matters if you are exposed to the regulation. This is not “Bitly is bad”, it is “Bitly was not built for this job.” We keep the same even-handed tone on our full Bitly alternative page.

Governance and analytics

Both products give you branded domains and click analytics. SwiftURL differs in two ways worth noting.

Governance is on every plan, not the top tier. Safety checks run on every link before it goes live, and a tamper-evident audit log is included on every plan rather than reserved for enterprise. Link-health monitoring, the checks that catch a dead destination before your customers do, comes in on Pro. The principle is that the safe path should not be a paid upsell.

Analytics are built to be trusted and acted on. Counts are timezone-correct and bots are filtered out, so the numbers reflect real reach rather than scanner noise. Analytics with AI Insights surface notable changes so you are deciding, not just watching a dashboard. If you want a method for turning those breakdowns into choices, see reading your analytics.

Which should you choose?

If you are…The better fit is…
A global team, light compliance needs, already on BitlyBitly is fine; switching cost may not be worth it
An Indian business sending SMS/WhatsApp linksSwiftURL, DLT/TRAI and DPDP are first-class
A team that wants governance on every planSwiftURL, safety checks and audit log are not gated
Price-sensitive and wants a useful free tierSwiftURL, fair pricing with analytics on Free

If your shortlist also includes Dub, we compare that separately on the Dub alternative page; Dub is powerful and global but USD-priced with no India regulatory depth.

If you decide to switch, how to do it calmly

Switching link tools sounds heavier than it is, because links are forward-looking. You do not need to migrate history to start benefiting:

  1. Set up your branded domain first on SwiftURL, one CNAME, automatic SSL. We walk through it in how to set up a branded short domain.
  2. Point new campaigns at the new domain. Every new link you create carries your brand and gets governance by default.
  3. Leave existing Bitly links alone. They keep resolving on Bitly as long as that account is live, so nothing breaks for customers who already have the old links.
  4. Rebuild your UTM presets so tagging stays consistent from day one, see UTM best practices.
  5. Retire Bitly when your active campaigns have rolled over, not before.

Because the switch is incremental, there is no risky “big-bang” migration and no window where links are in limbo. You are simply choosing where the next link is created.

Common mistakes when comparing

  • Comparing sticker prices only. A cheaper tier that withholds analytics or a custom domain is not actually cheaper for the job you need done.
  • Underrating governance. A shortener with no safety checks or audit trail can cost you far more than the subscription if a link goes wrong.
  • Assuming any shortener handles DLT. Most global tools have no concept of a sender header. Do not discover this mid-campaign.
  • Treating the free tier as the product. Check what the paid tier you will actually land on includes, not just the free one.

Frequently asked questions

Can Bitly do DLT/TRAI-compliant SMS links? Bitly does not offer India-specific DLT sender-header tooling. You would handle DLT separately through your SMS aggregator, with the link on Bitly disconnected from that compliance record. SwiftURL keeps the header and metadata attached to the link.

Is SwiftURL just a cheaper Bitly? No. It is priced fairly, but the substance is governance on every plan plus India compliance depth. We compete on keeping the promise a link makes, not on being the cheapest.

Will my existing Bitly links keep working if I switch? Your existing Bitly links continue to resolve on Bitly for as long as that account is active; you would create new links on SwiftURL, ideally on your own branded domain. Many teams move new campaigns over first rather than migrating everything at once.

The honest summary

Choose Bitly if you want a mature global brand and your compliance needs are light. Choose SwiftURL if you are an Indian business that needs DLT/TRAI and DPDP handled properly, wants fair rupee pricing, and expects governance on every plan, not just enterprise.
